In the former North Dorset District Council area there are over 2500 entries in the list of buildings of special architectural or historic importance.

The conservation team carries out our statutory responsibilities in safeguarding and maintaining the character of the district's listed buildings.

You can search for details of listed buildings using the  National Heritage List for England or by contacting the conservation team directly.

Advice is also given on the sensitive adaptation of redundant buildings that ensures their long-term conservation. We have compiled a buildings at risk register of listed buildings deemed to be at risk due to a lack of maintenance or neglect.

The main aim of the conservation team is to safeguard the special architectural and historic interest of heritage assets for the future. In doing so the team advise customers how modifications can be carried out to alter buildings and structures sympathetically using traditional or contemporary materials or designs where possible.

Listed building pre- applications and consent applications

A pre-application advice service is given for listed building owners and their agents on proposals that would require listed building consent. Pre-application advice is also given for proposals that require both listed building consent and planning permission. The team also provides advice on listed building applications and, where necessary, helps in the enforcement of historic building legislation.
