This page contains background information on the process of preparing the Development Plan Document (DPD) and the latest assessment of Gypsy and Traveller accommodation needs.
See the frequently asked questions for detailed facts and information about who the travelling communities are and why the study is being done. The answers also help to dispel some of the myths surrounding Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showpeople communities.

Evidence of the need for accommodation
The Plan was originally based on evidence of the need for pitches contained in an Accommodation Assessment prepared by Anglia Ruskin University in 2006. These figures were modified following debate at the Examination into the South West Regional Spatial Strategy.
In 2012 the councils agreed to undertake a new assessment of Gypsies and Travellers accommodation needs. The results can be found in the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Gypsy and Traveller and Travelling Showpeople Accommodation Assessment (September 2013) prepared for the councils by consultants Opinion Research Services.
The study found a need for another 150 residential pitches across the study area up to 2028 as well as for transit sites to serve both the Bournemouth / Poole conurbation and the Dorchester / Weymouth area.
