The type of funeral service and the way it is conducted is a matter of personal choice. We can hold Religious or Civil funerals in the nondenominational chapel. Your funeral director can guide you on the format of the service and inform us of your requirements.

Cremation services are normally 45 minute intervals. This allows for 5 minutes entering the chapel, 25 minutes for the service, and 5 minutes to leave the chapel. The family is then able to view floral tributes and receive other mourners.

If you feel that this is not long enough then it is possible to book an extended time at an extra charge. Extra time is advisable if you have lots of tributes, hymns or music to play, or if there a large number of mourners. Where possible it is advisable to do this at the time of the original booking.

On arrival at the crematorium, the coffin is removed from the hearse. It is then carried shoulder high into the chapel and placed onto the catafalque. It rests here during the funeral service.

Normally friends are seated, with the family following the coffin then taking their seats. Another option is for everyone to be seated when the coffin enters the chapel.

At the point of committal, curtains can be slowly drawn to leave the coffin hidden. Alternatively, if you prefer the curtains can be left open or just a soft voile drawn.

Upon exit, mourners are led to the covered floral tribute area where the funeral flowers are displayed.

Music

Music can often evoke many emotions – especially at a funeral service. Your choice of music is a personal one and we are usually able to source any piece you would like. You can order music through:

  • Your funeral director
  • the Bereavement Services Office
  • direct from Obitus

Obitus Music can digitise home produced CDs.

If you prefer live music to go with hymns, the chapel has an electronic organ. The Funeral Director or person arranging the funeral can appoint the organist for you.

Recording and webcasting

For those who have family or friends that are unable to attend it is possible to purchase a recording of the service as a lasting memorial. Any mourners worldwide who are unable to attend in person can watch a webcast of the service live via the internet, so are able to partake in the ceremony.

If you want a recording or webcast, you need to arrange it in advance with either your funeral director or by contacting the Bereavement Services Office.

The cremation

The final stage of the funeral is the process of placing the coffin into the cremator.
