Rural Connectivity Accelerator (RCA) Project

Bringing modern connectivity to rural areas

An innovation project has been completed in Swanage to test if WiFi can work on even the most rural and oldest railway networks.

This project aimed not only to enhance connectivity for Swanage Railway but also to prove that this kind of technology could help in various applications, such as council services by connecting vehicles and local businesses.

Government funding for innovation

We bid for and received £163,000 in government funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). This funding helped bring 21st century technology to Swanage Railway as part of the national Rural Connectivity Accelerator programme.

A testbed for connectivity

Swanage Railway served as a testbed for innovative connectivity solutions that can boost the rural economy. We partnered with Excelerate Technology UK to provide specialised mobile and satellite-powered public WiFi at key locations including:

  • Purbeck Park car park
  • Norden train station
  • On board the train

Enhancing visitor experience and beyond

This project has improved the experience for visitors using the railway and explored how these technologies can enhance services in remote areas. The successful implementation of this technology could lead to better connectivity for council fleets and other local services.

Addressing connectivity challenges

The project addressed the need for reliable connectivity in areas with challenging landscapes and limited service from traditional network operators.

Project partners Excelerate Technology UK created a dependable WiFi connection for Swanage Railway by using advanced solutions. They combined weak mobile signals to make a stronger connection and used backup Low Earth Orbit satellites if the main connection failed. This ensured the WiFi was always reliable.

Economic impact

Swanage Railway contributes over £15 million to the Dorset economy each year. Improved connectivity has enabled cashless systems and enhanced services, ensuring the railway remains a vital tourist attraction.

Leading the way for future rural connectivity projects

This initiative demonstrated the effectiveness of advanced technology in rural areas and set a precedent for similar projects across the UK. By showcasing how old and new technologies can work together, this project aims to benefit rural communities and enhance local tourism.
