You need a licence to put scaffolding on the highway, including the pavement. You do not need a licence for scaffolding on private land.
It's the responsibility of the builder or scaffolding company to get a licence.
It's your responsibility to check they have the licence and that it doesn't run out before the building work is finished.
Apply for a scaffold licence
You can apply for a scaffold licence if you are a contractor. You must apply at least 2 weeks before the scaffolding is due to be put up.
Cost
It costs £84 for a new licence which is valid for 28 days.
It costs £42 to renew an existing licence which is valid for 14 days.
If you do not remove the scaffolding before the licence expires, we will charge you £84.
Terms and conditions
The scaffolding company must agree to our terms and conditions when they apply for a licence.
Other licences
You need to apply for separate licences if the scaffolding:
- affects parking restrictions
- needs temporary traffic lights to make it safe for vehicles to pass
