It is sometimes hard to take a break, however, it is important to look after yourself when you are caring for others. There are many ways to help you take some time away from your caring role, like doing something you enjoy such as:
- starting a new hobby or sport
- spending time with people important to you
- meeting others at peer support groups
- taking a walk
- having a break away
Whatever you decide to do, apply for and make the most of the Dorset Carer Friendly ID Card which can give you discounts and special offers.
Respite and overnight stays away
If you want to access respite you will need an assessment. Some services are chargeable and require the person you care for to have their own Care Act assessment.
Carer Support Dorset can talk through with you what a break means to you and advise on how you may achieve this. For example, there are charities that offer opportunities for overnight stays:
- The Leonardo Trust funded caravan
- other local accommodation through Carefree
Contact Carer Support Dorset on 0800 368 8349 to find out more or take a look at their website.
More support for the person you care for
If the person you are caring for needs extra support, look for some help:
- get support for the person you care for
- look at the Help and Kindness Community Directory and search for the help you need
