Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC) is situated on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It benefits from easy access to a variety of high-quality watersports and climbing venues. Within 8 miles you'll find:

  • sheltered harbours and bays
  • the fleet tidal lagoon
  • tidal races
  • Portland crags
  • sea caves

Our experienced coaches and tutors are on hand to provide a safe, enjoyable and exhilarating experience, be it your first time at the sport or desire to enhance a specific skill.  

We offer a range of taster sessions, guided paddles, and courses to meet your desired outcomes, including bespoke tuition for individuals or small groups. 

Family open day

Event details

The family open day is:

  • Monday 29 July
  • 10am to 3pm
  • £5 per person, payable on the day
  • entry fee does not include refreshments

Minimum age of 6 years to take part in adventurous activities. Under 16’s must have a parent or a guardian in attendance.

Celebrating 60 years of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre, previously known as the Youth Activity Centre, with bunting, birthday cake (gifted by Loose Moose Catering) and adventurous activities.

Sign a consent form then join a queue for a 20 minute flavour of your activity of choice. Test your head for heights on the climbing tower, or your love of dark spaces in the tunnel system. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be Robin Hood and shoot some arrows. Either way, simply join the queue for an activity and have a go!

No need to pre-book just turn up on the day.

There is no guarantee as to how many activities you will be able to try, but you’ll be sure to expend some energy and make some lasting memories.

Enjoy some light refreshments from The Thirsty Magpie coffee van whilst you relax in the deck chairs (donated by Weymouth Town Council). Also for the little ones, we have the Action Van providing push scooters and circus skills. 

Whilst on-site, take a look around our hireable facilities, and talk to the group leaders about our birthday party packages, summer holiday activities and how to do more of what you’ve enjoyed at the event.

Beach day - float to live

Event details

The beach day is:

  • Free, bookable via SwimSafe website

Book a free SwimSafe Session and learn how to stay safe in open water. 

Safety equipment and instructors provided, but you’ll need to bring swimwear, water shoes (old trainers are fine), and a towel. We are not providing wetsuits, but suggest if you have your own, to bring it along with you.  Outside beach showers (cold) area available to rinse off, with plentiful public toilets at the Beach Office building. 

SwimSafe is a joint program between the RNLI and Swim England to teach young children how to swim safely in open water and in the event of being in the water in distress, how to survive.

Find on the main Weymouth beach, near the beach office, lifeguard station and clock tower. 

Summer Solstice paddle - fully booked 

Event details

The Summer Solstice paddle is:

  • Thursday 20 June and Friday 21 June
  • 7:30pm to 10:30pm
  • £25 per person

Minimum age of 8 years. All under 16’s to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Join us for a midsummer evening paddle tour in and around Sandsfoot Castle. You will head onto the waters in sit on top kayaks, lit up with glowsticks to explore Portland harbour by dusk. Enjoy the opportunity to marvel at the sunset as it dips over Chesil Bank, before heading back under the starry sky (clear sky permitting).

Summer full moon paddle

The Summer Solstice paddle is:

  • Monday 5 August
  • 7:30pm to 10:30pm
  • £25 per person

Minimum age of 8 years. All under 16’s to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Take to the water under the shimmer of  full moon, and lit only by glowsticks. You will be guided as a group around Sandsfoot Castle and Portland Harbour in sit on top kayaks, by a team of qualified instructors.

Kayak taster session

The Kayak taster session is:

  • 2pm to 5pm
  • £20 per person

Minimum age of 8 years. All under 16’s to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Try our sit on top kayaks in the sandy shallows of Sandsfoot Beach with an experienced and friendly instructor to help guide you.

These sessions are aimed as your first-time introduction to the sport. A gentle, short, and enjoyable experience where you can explore options to take the sport further.

We welcome both adults and families, including children aged 8 and over. All under 16 year olds must be joined by an accompanying by a fully participating adult. This is not a child focused session, but we can offer a party session that might be better suited.

Paddleboard taster session

The Kayak taster session is:

  • 10am to 1pm
  • £20 per person

Minimum age of 8 years. All under 16’s to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Test your balance on our inflatable stand up paddleboards in the calm waters of Portland Harbour or Weymouth Bay with an experienced and friendly instructor to help guide you.

These sessions are aimed as your first-time introduction to the sport. A gentle, short, and enjoyable experience where you can explore options to take the sport further.

Coasteer taster session

Event details

The Coasteer taster session is:

  • on Thursday 25 July, Wednesday 7 August, Thursday 22 August
  • 9am to 1pm
  • £50 per person

Minimum age 12. All under 16’s to be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Celebrate the summer holidays with a splash, as you explore the rocky features of Portland Bill by water! This is an adrenaline fuelled session that requires a good level of water confidence and physical strength. Test your head for heights as you jump off, swim to and scramble around some iconic Jurassic coastal features, such as sea caves, ledges, and rock stacks. You’ll see limpets in action as well as marvelling at ammonites, which were shelled cephalopods that died about 66 million years ago.

All equipment and minibus transport included. Small group size and in the capable hands of two experienced team members, led by a qualified National Coasteer Charter guide.
