Information on derelict buildings and public safety
The action taken depends on the condition of the building and the danger it presents to the public. In some instances, emergency works are arranged to make the building safe and this can involve closing the highway, shoring up the structure or putting up barriers or fencing to secure the area.
In the event that the building is not an immediate danger we ensure that appropriate action, such as a structural survey, is being undertaken by the owner. Typically, this leads to remedial work or further monitoring being carried out to safeguard the general public.
Technical expertise is also provided to the emergency services. For example, we will assess whether it is safe to enter a fire damaged building, advise if the highway needs to be closed or how a vehicle can be removed from a building without causing it to collapse.
