Overview

You may be entitled to a reduction on your Council Tax bill if you, or someone living in the same property as you, provides care for at least 35 hours a week. 

There is no limit on the number of carers that can be disregarded, provided they each meet the eligibility criteria.

There is no restriction on a carer also having additional employment, for example, if parents are looking after adult children who require care.

Eligability

Please check you meet the following criteria before applying:

  • the person providing care must live within the same property as the person being cared for
  • the person must be providing care for at least 35 hours per week
  • they are not the spouse or partner of the person being cared for, or their parent if they care for a child under 18
  • the person needs to be providing care to someone receiving at least one of the following benefits:
    • higher rate attendance allowance under S65 of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992
    • the Highest or Middle Rate of the Care Component of Disability Living Allowance under S72 of the Social security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992
    • the lower rate or higher of Attendance Allowance
    • the standard or enhanced rate of Daily Living Component of the Personal Independence Payment as defined by the Personal Independence Payment (Supplementary Provisions and Consequential Amendments) Regulations 2013
    • an increase in the rate of disablement pension under S104 of the above act
    • an increase in the constant attendance allowance under the above act
    • an armed forces independence payment

Apply

Before you apply make sure you have your:

  • Council Tax Reference number, this can be found at the top of your Council Tax bill

You will also be asked to upload evidence of one of the following benefits:

  • the highest or middle rate of the care component of a disability living allowance
  • an increase in the rate of disablement pensions (due to the need for constant attendance)
  • an increase in the rate of disablement pensions (due to the need for constant attendance)
  • the standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component of personal independence payment
  • an attendance allowance
