Dorset young people enjoying some rock climbing fun

As part of the Holiday Activities and Food programme, Dorset Council's Weymouth Outdoor Education Service ran festive and adventurous activities for children and young people aged 8 to 16 during the Christmas holidays.

These sessions took place at Tout Quarry on Portland and provided enriching and memorable experiences for children; encouraging outdoor exploration, teamwork, and holiday spirit.

On the first day, the children embraced the winter weather at the quarry, equipped with waterproofs, helmets and spare shoes. The rock hopping team explored the rocky features and muddy puddles.

They returned to enjoy a hearty Christmas dinner served by Weymouth-based Loose Moose Catering Ltd. Christmas crackers were popped, jokes were shared, and gifts under the tree were passed around. The day continued with indoor rock climbing and tunnelling by headtorch.

The fun continued the next day with teenagers benefiting from similar indoor and outdoor adventures. They also enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner and festive gifts.

These outdoor activities and nutritious meals were free for those with a HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) passcode.

The initiative aims to ensure all local children and young people have the opportunity to get involved with enriching holiday activities and enjoy nutritious meals.

To make this session easier to get to, those who needed it were provided with a free minibus service.

Cllr Byron Quayle, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Children, Education, and Early Help, said: "We're delighted to offer these unique and festive experiences to young people. These sessions not only provide a fun and adventurous outlet during the Christmas break but also foster a sense of community and togetherness.”
