Businesses, interest groups and people who live, work or travel in the Western Gateway region are encouraged to give their feedback on the transport investment proposals via an online survey until Sunday 2 February 2025.
Cllr Jon Andrews, our Cabinet Member for Place Services, said, “I encourage residents and businesses to comment on the draft Strategic Investment Plan. The final document will be vital for securing extra investment from central government and will improve connectivity across our region over the next decade. It will also better support transportation of goods for businesses and help to provide better economic growth in Dorset. The way we travel has a major impact on carbon emissions and the strategies set out here will help us achieve our net zero target.”
The Western Gateway is one of seven sub-national transport bodies in England, setting out the transport strategy for the region, adding value to the work of its local authorities, and offering a unified voice for the region’s priorities to the government in order to boost economic growth.
The Western Gateway comprises Bath & North East Somerset Council, Bournemouth Christchurch & Poole Council, Bristol City Council, Dorset Council, Gloucestershire County Council, North Somerset Council, South Gloucestershire Council, Wiltshire Council and the West of England Combined Authority. It works directly with the Department for Transport, alongside National Highways, Network Rail and Homes England.

Views sought on the transport schemes shortlisted to take forward as part of the Western Gateway region’s long-term Strategic Investment Plan
9 January 2025
Western Gateway STB, the Sub-national Transport Body for the West of England, is seeking views on its draft Strategic Investment Plan, a shortlist of 38 multi-modal transport schemes proposed for the region over the next decade.
The shortlisted schemes have been selected to best support the delivery of five key aims for the region’s transport, as identified in Western Gateway STB’s Strategic Transport Plan 2025-2050: sustainable economic and housing growth, reducing emissions, enabling access to services and opportunities for all, easing freight movements and improving transport links between the north and south of the region which stretches from Gloucestershire to Dorset.
Businesses, interest groups and people who live, work or travel in the Western Gateway region are encouraged to give their feedback on the transport investment proposals via an online survey until Sunday 2nd February 2025.
Speaking on the importance of the Strategic Investment Plan for the Western Gateway region, Western Gateway Board member and North Somerset Councillor, Cllr Hannah Young said: “These transport scheme proposals are designed to address the unique transport challenges we face in our region and will form our recommendations to the government for investment over the next ten years.
“That’s why we want to hear from as many residents, businesses, organisations and transport-user groups as possible to tell us if we have identified the right transport priorities for our region, and where investment is most critically needed to deliver a transport system that creates opportunities, boosts productivity and provides a better quality of life for people across the region.”
The survey on ‘Delivering our vision: Western Gateway STB’s Strategic Investment Plan 2025-2050’ can be found online at https://haveyoursaywesterngateway.participatr.io/ or by emailing WesternGatewaySTB@westofengland-ca.gov.uk.
The consultation closes on Sunday 2nd February 2025.
