Opportunity to comment on proposed Osmington speed limit reductions
Views are being sought on proposals to reduce the speed limit on several roads in and around the village of Osmington.
We are running the public consultation until 20 December 2024.
Residents, commuters, and local interested groups can support, object or provide comments on the proposals online using our TRO webpages
Comments on the proposals for or against, together with the reasons, can also be made in writing and sent to Traffic Regulation Team, Dorset Council, Colliton Park, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 1XJ by no later than 20 December 2024.
Residents, the parish council and Dorset councillors have requested several speed limit reductions for the village.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “The local community has voiced strong support for these speed limit reductions, and our road safety team has carefully evaluated them in light of local collision data and Department for Transport guidelines.
“These proposals represent a significant step forward in enhancing road safety in Osmington and the surrounding area. I am pleased that we are now able to gather broader public feedback.”
To improve safety and consistency, the speed review is split into six areas. These proposed changes address several serious collisions that have occurred over previous years:
A353
Move the 30mph terminal at the western end of Osmington approximately 45 metres to include the entrance for Eweleaze Farm. This change will act to slow speeds for the nearby busy campsite. A speed indicator device (SID) will also be installed reminding drivers of their speed.
Extend the current 30mph at the eastern end of Osmington by approximately 61 metres to provide a slower speed transition for vehicles entering the village.
Lower the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph between the villages of Osmington and Poxwell for approximately 802 metres.
Extend the current 40mph by 250 metres to incorporate the busy junction used for access to Ringstead Bay.
Mills Road
Reduce the speed limit on Mills Road, which runs to Osmington Mills, to 30mph. This road’s speed limit is currently 60mph which is inappropriate for this road.
Road to Ringstead Bay
Reduce the speed limit on the road to Ringstead Bay to 30mph. This road’s speed limit is currently 60mph which is inappropriate for this road.
