Mixing fun and support for SEND families 

Children in Ferndown with special educational needs and disabilities have participated in fun and educational cooking classes, thanks to Local Alliance Groups (LAG) funding. 

The LAG funding has successfully supported the delivery of five engaging sessions during the school holidays for 10-15 children aged 5-13 years. 

 These sessions were introduced to address a significant gap in holiday activities for this age group, providing meaningful opportunities for children and families alike. 

During the sessions, children have had the chance to make afternoon tea, cook pizzas, and bake cupcakes.  

Each child has been provided with aprons, chef hats, and bowls to take home, encouraging them to continue practicing their new skills outside of the sessions.  

The programme has not only offered enjoyment for the children but has also fostered valuable social opportunities among parents, particularly those caring for children with additional needs. 

The sessions were led by a parent who understands the unique challenges faced by families of children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).  

The programme has received overwhelming positive feedback, with one parent sharing, "It's so lovely to see my child so engaged in this activity and look forward to the school holidays so we can come back." Children themselves are equally enthusiastic, frequently asking, "What can we do next time?" 

Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education, and Skills, said:  

"This is a fantastic example of a community-led program making a real difference. The dedication shown by everyone involved, and the joy it brings to children and their families, is great to see." 

Nicky Hornsby, manager at The Centre in Ferndown said, added: 

"Following discussions with parents of children who have SEND, it became clear that there were limited activities available during the holidays for children over the age of 5 and under 12.  

“Seeing the pride the children take in their work and the joy it brings to families makes this programme so important 

We are grateful for the support of the East Locality LAG, and we look forward to delivering even more sessions in the future." 

Due to increasing demand, sessions for children without additional needs will also be introduced next year. 

This programme was made possible thanks to funding from Dorset Council which was allocated by the Local Alliance.   

This enabled Ferndown Family Hub to buy all the necessary resources for the activities. 

Local Alliance Groups include members who have a vested interest in making a difference in the lives of children and families.  

There are six local alliance groups in Dorset, each representing a different geographical area. The groups agree on priorities and create plans to improve things for children and young people in their local area.
