Dorset Stands with Ukraine

Monday 24 February marks the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Since Vladimir Putin’s forces began the war in 2022, millions have fled the country, with 1,000 Ukrainians now living in Dorset.

Dorset Council will be flying the Ukrainian flag at County Hall in Dorchester to show our continued support and solidarity.

Cllr Ryan Hope, Portfolio Holder for Customer, Culture, and Community Engagement at Dorset Council, said, "As we observe the third anniversary of this conflict, we continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine and reaffirm our commitment to those fleeing the conflict in their homeland.

“We will raise the Ukrainian flag to send a clear message of support, especially to those Ukrainians who have chosen to make our county their home in the past years.

“We also want to thank local voluntary and community organisations we work with for ensuring refugees arriving from Ukraine are welcomed and receive the support they need.”

For many of the refugees, the challenges they faced on arriving in UK have shifted from immediate need for accommodation, navigating the benefit system to more long-term solutions such as stable employment and self-employment, pursuing training and qualifications as well as more permanent housing options.

Layla, a refugee in Dorset, left Ukraine as the war progressed, and it became too dangerous to stay.

She says: “When I first arrived in the UK, I lived with a sponsor as part of the family.  I later managed to secure a private rented accommodation in Dorset, which I love.

I initially struggled to find suitable employment but eventually found a job I am passionate about.

With training and support from my employer, my English has improved, and I have even started learning other languages.

I plan to apply for the Ukraine Permission Extension scheme and hope for a visa extension to continue my employment.

Of course, I miss my family and friends back home, but thankfully I have found some friends in a local church group that has given me invaluable support and motivation.”

Dorset Council’s Ukraine Response Team are there for both hosts and refugees, ensuring the transition is as smooth as possible for all concerned.
