Dorset Council role models disability inclusion for UKDH month

Posted on:

Almost 1 in 5 people in Dorset are disabled, and last week to mark the end of UK Disability History Month, Dorset Council shared some of the work it has been doing to support its disabled employees and act as a role-model for other local employers to do the same.

As a Disability Confident employer, we know we still have more to do, but we are proud of the way our Disability Employee Network supports us to understand and advocate for the experiences of disabled people locally.

For this year’s UK Disability History Month, Dorset Council’s Disability Employee Network created a short video to create understanding of some of the barriers that disabled people face at work. This is part of a wider programme of work highlighting how employee networks a safe space for people with similar experiences to support each other and to support and constructively challenge the organisation to make them more inclusive for all people.

Disability Employee Network Lead, Izzy Pochin, said: “it has been fantastic reflecting on the progress we have made as a Network over the last 2 years and to remind ourselves of the difference that a sense of belonging and psychological safety makes to everyone involved”.
