Weather disruption
Winter weather is causing disruption to services in some parts of the county. Find out what services may be affected in your area.
Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves need Building Regulation Approval.
The easiest way to get approved is to use a registered Competent Person for the installation. They will test and certify the appliance and notify us once they complete the work.
If you choose not to use a Competent Person then you will need to apply to Dorset Building Control.
Our Building Control Team can help with any queries to make sure the appliance meets government guidelines.
You will also need to consider smoke control areas and authorised fuels air quality. Our Environmental Health team can help further with this.
You may also need planning permission for the installation of any flue or chimney. More information is available on the planning portal.
If you want to install a burner or stove into a listed building you might need Listed Building Consent.
If you live in a thatched property, please read Historic England’s advice about reducing the risk of fire in thatched properties.
You can use our permitted development advice service if you would like confirmation on if you will need permission or consent. You can also request pre application advice before you start.
