The mental health and wellbeing of mums, dads, partners and carers is also important for the development of the baby. Poor mental health can impact a parent’s ability to bond with their baby. This is why it is important that parents and carers have their own needs met so they can meet the needs of their baby.
Peer support is an effective intervention in supporting parents with mild mental health difficulties. This is a model that is already used in many areas across England and has positive outcomes for service users. Peer supporters can provide support for parents experiencing mild difficulties, such as anxiety or low mood.
There is £70,000 of funding available with this grant.
We are seeking to develop peer support for expectant and new parents experiencing mild mental health difficulties through implementation of peer-to-peer initiatives in at least 6 main Family Hubs across Dorset (at least one per locality).

The project group would like to keep in touch with the grant recipient regularly during the initial delivery in the Autumn and meet quarterly thereafter. The indicators to be measured and reported are:
We would also like organisations to design their own additional impact measures, such as number of parents becoming volunteers, and qualitative reporting such as case studies or video pieces.

Data for the year Jan-Dec 2023 shows parents on the Health Visiting service Perinatal Mental Health pathway. At the end of the year, 73% of parents had achieved positive outcomes with their Health Visitor. 27% were still receiving support or had been referred to more specialised services.
Evaluators will score each bid across the following five areas, each equally weighted at 20% of the total score.
