At the start of each winter, Dorset Highways refill all roadside salt bins with salt and/or grit for use in the community on public roads and pavements.
Request a refill of a road salt (grit) bin
You can contact us to request a road salt bin is refilled
Each salt/grit bin has been classified as either a 'strategic’ or ‘community’ bin – with ‘strategic’ bins being refilled during the winter free of charge, and community bins being refilled on request and paid for by town and parish councils.
In the event of severe weather, further refills are carried out as time and resources allow – it is the responsibility of town and parish councils to ensure that refills are ordered in a timely manner.
Town and parish councils can also purchase one-tonne dumpy bags of salt.
Dorset Highways does not provide salt bins. Should a town or parish council require a salt bin within their community, local community highways officers will advise on the purchase and placement of the bins.
