Course aim
To have an overview of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to apply it, make Best Interest Decisions and understand the Deprivation of Liberty process.
Course learning objectives
Assessing Capacity:
- Assessing Capacity
- an understanding of the process of assessing capacity and the thresholds for decisions
- the practical skills needed to assess capacity
- how to ensure appropriate record keeping
Best Interest Decisions:
- an understanding of the process of making Best Interest Decisions
- who needs to be involved in Best Interest Decision making
- the practical skills needed to assess Best Interests
- how to ensure appropriate record keeping
Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS):
- depending on which sector you are in, you will have an understanding of what DoLS is
- your role, what information is needed and the tools and contacts to complete this whether that is applying for a DoLS or going to the Court of Protection.
- have received an update on the current position around Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) replacement of DoLS.

Managers/lead practitioners working in Social Care.

£40 per attendee
These costs will also be incurred for attendees who are classified as a late cancellation, meaning those who cancel their place within 1 week of the course date, or are a ‘no show’ on the day of the course.
