Avon Heath Country Park welcomes responsible dog owners and although the site is home to some rare wildlife, we know that through working together it possible to ensure the heath is a good home for wildlife as well as a great place for dog walking.
Please follow the Dorset Dogs 'Doggy Do Code' when visiting the park.
For the welfare of all visitors, the wildlife and dogs, Avon Heath also requires dog walkers to adhere to the following requirements whilst walking their dogs at Avon Heath:
Wildlife and livestock
- from 1 March to 31 July all dogs must always be kept on a short lead, to protect ground nesting birds and breeding reptiles, including adders.
- out of the breeding season, dogs should always be within sight and 15m of the owner/walker, trained reliably to come to heel or the dog should be kept on a lead.
- please remain on designated paths and out of the heather
- British White cattle are grazed across the site. Whilst they are a placid breed, if you are in any doubt as to how your dog would behave around the cattle, please use a lead or choose and alternative route.
Respecting others
- all dog owners must clean up after their dogs, use the dog bins on site or remove the waste from the park
- anyone bringing more than 3 dogs to the park must always keep them on leads
- commercial dog walking is not allowed
- dogs must be kept on a lead in all the car parks, and around the play area
- for you and your dog’s safety please be aware that vehicles use the tracks in the park throughout the day
- although you know your dog may be friendly, others don't know this, so do not let it run up to other visitors
Dog wash
Avon Heath is host to a self-service dog wash, conveniently located within the heart of the park.
This easy to use facility is ideal for washing your dog. The machine provides warm water, a range of shampoos and a two speed dryer - all at a low cost.
