Dominated by large-scale planned enclosure, some parliamentary, suggesting the relatively late enclosure of areas of former downland.

Known archaeology

Prehistoric features, such as round barrows. Extensive areas of prehistoric field systems, surviving as earthworks or visible as crop/soil marks in arable. Associated prehistoric and Romano-British enclosures and larger-scale settlements. Iron Age hillforts are a notable feature.
